Full Itinerary
Arrival in Addis & Flight to the North (Wukro)
Morning (Early Arrival): You land at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. After clearing customs, you will board a connecting domestic flight to Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region (e.g., flight ET 100, departing ~8:00 AM) .
Late Morning: Upon arrival in Mekele, you will meet your guide and driver. You begin with a visit to the Palace of Yohannes IV, a beautiful stone castle dedicated to the 19th-century emperor who was born nearby .
Afternoon: After lunch in Mekele, you drive towards Wukro. En route, you stop to explore Wukro Chirkos, an accessible and impressive 10th-century rock-hewn church. It provides a perfect, gentle introduction to Ethiopia’s famous monolithic architecture .

The Rock Churches of Gheralta & Drive to Axum
This is a physically active day involving some hiking to reach ancient churches built into cliff faces.
Morning (Early Start): You drive to the Gheralta massif, a dramatic sandstone mountain range known as the "cradle of Orthodox Christianity." You will visit Abreha Atsbeha, one of the oldest churches in the country, featuring unique arches and ceiling paintings .
Late Morning: A local guide will lead you up one of the rock churches based on your fitness level. Options range from the easier Maryam Papaseti to the challenging Abuna Yemata Guh (which requires a short, exposed climb but offers incredible frescoes and views) .
Afternoon: You drive towards Axum, passing through the historic town of Adwa, the site of a major Ethiopian victory over Italian forces in 1896 .

The Ancient Kingdom of Axum
A full day dedicated to exploring the archaeological heart of Ethiopia.
Morning: You visit the Stele Field, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring massive, carved granite obelisks marking the tombs of ancient Axumite kings. You also see the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, which is believed to house the Ark of the Covenant in a nearby chapel, guarded by a single monk for life .
Afternoon: Explore the underground Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel and the so-called Queen of Sheba's Bath, an ancient reservoir. You will also visit the archaeological museum to see artifacts from this great empire .

Full Day: You leave Axum and drive west towards the Simien Mountains. You will take the stunning Tsellemti mountain road, a newly completed route offering breathtaking views of the peaks and valleys. This is a fantastic day for photography stops as you cross from the Tigray region into the Amhara region .
Late Afternoon: Arrive in Debark, the small town that serves as the base for entering the Simien Mountains National Park.

Simien Mountains National Park & Drive to Gondar
A day of high-altitude trekking and wildlife spotting in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
Morning: After an early breakfast, you enter the Simien Mountains National Park. The park is famous for its jagged peaks, deep canyons, and unique wildlife. You will take a trek of a few hours (e.g., around the Sankaber area) to witness the dramatic escarpments .
Afternoon: Keep an eye out for the endemic Gelada baboons (known as "bleeding-heart baboons"), and if you are lucky, the rare Walia ibex . After your trek, you drive down from the mountains to the historic city of Gondar.
