The Experience
Timket, or Ethiopian Epiphany, is one of the most spectacular religious festivals in Ethiopia, celebrating the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. It takes place annually on January 19 (or January 20 in leap years) and is a true feast for the senses—featuring vibrant processions, chanting priests, drumming, and the dramatic blessing of water .
This 2-day itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience the heart of Timket, typically in Gondar, which is widely considered the most atmospheric place to celebrate the festival .

Witness the most significant event of the eve: sacred Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) are wrapped in rich cloth and carried on the heads of priests from nearby churches
The Tabots are paraded with great ceremony, accompanied by singing, chanting, drumming, and the ringing of sistrums (sacred rattles)
The procession moves to a designated body of water—in Gondar, this is the Bath of Fasilides, a massive stone pool
The Tabots remain overnight at the baptism site, watched over by clergy and faithful worshippers
Evening: Overnight Vigil
Many worshippers stay overnight, praying and celebrating around the pool
You can choose to stay for a while to absorb the atmosphere or return to your hotel for rest

Thousands of worshippers gather, dressed in traditional white cotton garments (netela)

Dawn: The Water Blessing
The head priest blesses the water, often by dipping a gold-tipped cross into the pool
The blessed water is then sprinkled over the gathered crowd as a symbolic re-enactment of Christ's baptism
Some faithful may immerse themselves in the water for a full blessing
