The Experience
Addis Ababa offers rich museums, major religious sites, green parks, and lively markets. Key museums include the National Museum (home of “Lucy”), the Ethnological Museum in Haile Selassie’s former palace, the Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum on the Derg era, and the new Adwa Museum on Ethiopia’s anti‑colonial history. Important religious landmarks are Holy Trinity Cathedral with imperial tombs, St. George’s Cathedral near Piazza, and Entoto St. Mary Church on Mount Entoto, linked to the city’s founding. For views and relaxation, visitors head to Mount Entoto and Entoto Park, Unity Park in the Grand Palace, Friendship and Sheger Parks, and Gullele Botanical Garden. City life is felt in Merkato, one of Africa’s largest markets, in smaller Shola and Sheromeda markets (especially for traditional clothes), and around Meskel Square, the main festival and gathering plaza. A typical one‑day loop is: morning at the National Museum and Holy Trinity, lunch with a traditional coffee ceremony, afternoon at Entoto Park or Unity Park, and an evening stroll in Friendship/Sheger Park or Piazza.
