Museums and history
National Museum of Ethiopia – Famous as the home of “Lucy” (3.2 million year old hominid fossil) and important artefacts from ancient and imperial Ethiopia.
Ethnological Museum (Addis Ababa University) – Located in Haile Selassie’s former palace; excellent for understanding Ethiopia’s cultures, languages, and traditional lifestyles.
Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum – Documents the Derg period (1974–1991) with testimonies, photos, and exhibits; very powerful but emotionally heavy.
Adwa Museum / Adwa 00 Museum – New landmark museum presenting the Battle of Adwa and Ethiopia’s anti colonial history.
Religious landmarks
Holy Trinity Cathedral (Kidist Selassie) – Grand cathedral with impressive stained glass, imperial tombs (including Emperor Haile Selassie), and a small museum.
St. George’s Cathedral – Historic octagonal church near Piazza, linked to the Battle of Adwa; has a museum with church treasures and photos.
Entoto St. Mary Church – On Mount Entoto; associated with Emperor Menelik II and the founding of Addis Ababa.

Friendship Park & Sheger Park – Modern central parks with fountains, walking paths, and night lighting; popular for evening strolls.
Gullele Botanical Garden – Large green area on the city’s edge, good for nature walks and native plants.
Markets and urban life
Merkato (Addis Mercato) – One of Africa’s largest open air markets; chaotic but very atmospheric for spices, clothes, coffee, and everything else.
Shola Market & Sheromeda – Smaller, more manageable markets; Sheromeda is especially good for traditional clothes and textiles.
Meskel Square – Central plaza and transport hub; main site for Meskel festival and public gatherings.
